Die Sonate op. 38, die Brahms in den Sommermonaten der Jahre 1862 und 1865 komponierte, gehört zum Standardrepertoire jedes Cellisten. Das Werk ist ein Gruß an J.S. Bach. Im ersten Satz hat Brahms das Hauptthema dem Contrapunctus 4 und im Finale das Fugenthema dem Contrapunctus 13 aus der Kunst der Fuge nachgebildet. Vom Komponisten mit den Worten "durchaus unschwer für beide Instrumente zu spielen" dem Verlag Breitkopf & Härtel angeboten, ist die Sonate, im Gegensatz zu ihrem Schwesterwerk in F-Dur, auch von fortgeschrittenen Laienmusikern aufführbar.
