A Festive Overture for Large Wind Ensemble
Dan Welcher's Spumante for wind ensemble was commissioned by the Boston Pops and its conductor, Keith Lockhart, and premiered during the celebratory opening of their 1998 season. This later transcription for band by Paul Bissell in 1999 was premiered by the Dallas Wind Symphony in January of 2000, conducted by Dr. Kevin L. Sedatole. Spumante, named for an Italian sparkling wine, recalls the neoclassical style of the '40s exemplified by composers such as William Schuman and Vincent Persichetti. It also employs inversion, a technique in which the first theme is simply turned inside-out and presented as a second theme. For advanced players. Duration: 7'
