„Epitaphium“ wurde ursprünglich für die Trauerfeier des 2007 verstorbenen britischen Fagottisten und Musikwissenschaflters William Waterhouse geschrieben. Der Komponist Graham Waterhouse wollte seinem Vater eine Art „musikalisches Denkmal“ im Kleinen setzen, etwas Persönliches, Rituelles, „zeitlos“ wie ein Grabstein. Das kurze eindrucksvolle Stück ist von hoher Klangintensität und Dichte. Reine Intervalle (Quarte, Quinte, Oktave) prägen die harmonische Sprache. Als verstecktes Zitat taucht das Motiv „Requiescant in pace“ aus Brittens „War Requiem“ auf.
