The present volume contains five orchestral works, which Sibelius composed in 1904–1910: Die Dryade (Op. 45 No. 1), Musik zu einer Szene [Op. 45 No. 2/1904], Tanz-Intermezzo (Op. 45 No. 2), Pohjolas Tochter (Op. 49), and Pan und Echo (Op. 53a). An early version of Tanz-Intermezzo is included as an appendix.
In addition, a fragment illustrating the unrealized plan of a symphonic poem called “Luonnotar”, which Sibelius reworked into Pohjolas Tochter, appears as a facsimile. Musik zu einer Szene is now published for the first time. Except for Pohjolas Tochter, all the works were composed for a choreographic purpose, (sub-)titled or referred to as “dance intermezzos,” or related to opus 45.
