Schumann’s Dichterliebe – Sheet Music

The wonderful song cycle “Dichterliebe” op. 48, A Poet’s Love, was written in Robert Schumann“s “Liederjahr”, his year of song 1840, in which he not only composed most of his Lieder, but was also finally granted permission to marry his love Clara Schumann née Wieck. The cycle consists of 16 romantic art songs based on poems by Heinrich Heine. The Cycle

Originally Robert Schumann did not compose 16 but 20 songs to poems from Heinrich Heine’s 1827 collection ’Book of Songs’. But before he went to print four years later, Schumann decided to take out four songs and published them in other song collections. Today, the four discarded songs are often published in the appendix.
