The Czech Christmas Mass by Mozart's contemporary J.J. Ryba (1765-1815) is the most important of the Czech Christmas Masses, which, despite the name "mass", are sequences of vocal and instrumental scenes on the theme of the birth of Christ performed during Christmas services. It tells the story of four Czech shepherds who are told of the birth of Christ and visit the child in the manger.
