"Ring Around the Moon" ist eine in jeder Hinsicht ungewöhnliche Komposition, die Partchs satirische und ernsthafte Absichten ineinander vermischt und absurde, unsinnige Einwürfe der Sprechstimme intensiven und komplizierten Harmoniesequenzen gegenüberstellt. Obwohl Partch dieses Stück erst 1952 beendete, arbeitete er schon seit 1949 daran, wobei er jeweils verschiedene Titel benutzte. Zur ersten Fassung Tonality Flux sind keine Entwürfe überliefert; die zweite Fassung unter dem Titel Sonata Dementia wurde 1951 eingespielt.
