"In Italien benennet man, heutiges Tages, eine lateinische geistliche Solocantate, welche aus zween Arien und zweyen Recitativen besteht, und sich mit einem Halleluja schließt, und welche unter der Messe, nach dem Credo, gemeiniglich von einem der besten Sänger gesungen wird, mit diesem Namen [Motette]."
Eine Komposition solcher Art ist die Solomotette "Exsultate, jubilate" KV 165/158a, die W. A. Mozart zu Anfang des Jahres 1773 in Mailand nach der höchst erfolgreichen Aufführung seiner Oper "Lucio Silla" für den berühmten Soprankastraten Venanzio Rauzzini schrieb. Rauzzini, von 1766 bis 1772 erster Sänger am Hofe zu München, hatte die Hauptpartie in der Oper gesungen. Die Motette erklang zum erstenmal am 17. Januar 1773 in der Theatinerkirche San Antonio zu Mailand. Das Autograph, einst in der ehemaligen Preußischen Staatsbibliothek Berlin, befindet sich heute in der Biblioteka Uniwersytetu Jagielonskiego Kraków.
