Technikai tanulmányok Vol. III (Suppl. 3)
EMB New Liszt Edition
The 11 supplementary volumes under preparation are a continuation of series I and II (works for piano solo) of the New Liszt Edition and contain early versions which hardly differ from the final form, primarily those which Liszt himself published. Alongside these are unpublished first versions, and a few works which were omitted from series I and II (e.g. Technical Studies, Berlioz: Harold en Italie). In the appendices of some volumes works extant in only fragmentary form are also published. The customary German and English of the series has been complemented with Hungarian. The first of the supplementary volumes to be issued is Part 3 of the Technical Studies, the manuscript of which, after undergoing a turbulent history and lying hidden for decades, was discovered in Weimar only in 1975, and appeared in print in 1983. Here as part of the NLE we are publishing reproductions of a few pages of the original manuscript, in both the clothbound and paper bound versions. As well as serving as illustrations, they make it possible to study Liszt's writing style. In this volume, the critical commentary is included in the paper bound edition too. The thematic index provides an overview of the entire material of all three volumes of the Technical Studies.
