Description

"You are clubbed to the ground and then lifted to the highest heights on angels' wings." (Mahler over zijn 2de symfonie "Wederopstanding", July 1894) *"You are clubbed to the ground and then lifted to the highest heights on angels' wings" Composed on commission by Concertband Maasmechelen (BE), conducted by Mark Prils. Kevin Houben was inspired for this work by Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony, better known as the Resurrection Symphony. The work can be seen as a ma(h)lery of numerous compositional and atmospheric elements that refer to the Austrian composer but are processed here in a contemporary way. Just as Mahler often found his inspiration in nature, the opening of the work brings the listener back to nature. It begins with an alto flute solo, accompanied by a pedal note in four octaves, in which harmonic responses are processed as echoes. Right from the start, Kevin Houben colours Mahler's material with contemporary tones. He replaces the natural sounds Mahler uses (pure fourths) with tritone leaps. The off-stage trumpet signals are retained, but are given a new accompaniment. Gradually, the orchestra undergoes its own independent development in the piece. The musical signature of Mahler is recognisable, but Kevin Houben allows it to blossom into a more modern musical idiom, typical of modern compositions for wind orchestra (cfr. Where Angels Fly) through the use of various timbres. The work ends magnificently with a passage of the famous chorale from Mahler's Second Symphony. The rich orchestration of the chorale creates the illusion of the presence of a choir and organ without actually using them. In Resurrection, each instrumental group has its turn: in solo fragments, in transparent thematic passages or in grandiose tuttis. The work is a fascinating challenge for a wind orchestra on several levels, both technically and melodically - above all because of the great arc of tension that the musical structure demands. The work is suitable for a wide audience and can be considered an added value to any concert programme. Resurrection sweeps the audience along different atmospheres and experiences: from impressive to harrowing, from calming to inspiring...
