Originally written for the satirical play Love in a village by Isaac Bickerstaffe in 1762, and later augmented by others, this song describes the life of a singing and dancing miller who is poor, but content in working hard to earn enough money to sustain his family. Notable arrangements of the song have been written by composers including Benjamin Britten and John Rutter.
