The Cornett

The cornett had its heyday in the early 17th century, and is counted among the brass instruments because of its trumpet-esque sound production, and its Kessel mouthpiece. The cornett is made mainly of wood, and the mouthpiece of wood, horn or ivory.

The cornett was primarily used as the upper part to the trombone since the Renaissance period, before it became a virtuoso solo instrument in the late 16th century. With the advent of a new swathe of melodic instruments, such as the violin and the oboe, the cornett gradually became less and less important.

In the 20th century, the cornett experienced an intense revival, with the rediscovery of early music and historical performance practice.
