für zwei Violinen, Viola und zwei Violoncelli
Giuseppe Maria Cambini, born in Livorno probably in 1746, not only wrote operas and symphonies but also more than 100 string quintets for two violins, viola and two violoncellos. His works are characterized by a smooth and flowing melody inspired by the sound of the strings. The virtuoso solos which are quite common in concert quintets step back in favour of cantabile passages. Tilman Sieber ('Das klassische Streichquintett - Die Geschichte einer Gattung in Einzelwerken') edited the autograph scores and now presents String Quintet No. 84 in D major, a demanding chamber music work.
