Franz (Frantisek) Xaver Brixi wurde am Piaristen-Gymnasium in Kosmonosy ausgebildet. Nach seiner Gymnasialzeit ging er nach Prag, wo er in verschiedenen Kirchen Dienst tat. Wegen seiner außergewöhnlichen musikalischen Begabung wurde er am 1. Januar 1759, an die bedeutendste Stelle im damaligen Musikleben, zum Regens chori am Prager Veitsdom berufen. Dieses Amt bekleidete er bis zu seinem Tode.
