Die Grande messe des morts (Requiem) ist im Jahre 1837 auf Veranlassung des französischen Innenministers Adrien de Gasparin entstanden. Dieser beabsichtigte, mit der jährlichen Vergabe von Kompositionsaufträgen seines Ressorts, “in Frankreich die geistliche Musik wieder au Ehren zu bringen“.
