Als Grundlage für den Notentext dieser Ausgabe ohne Fingersatz dienten die bereits 1997 überarbeitete Henle-Ausgabe von Teil I und Yo Tomitas brandneue Revision von Teil II (Frühjahr 2007). Tomita, der bedeutende Bach-Forscher, erläutert die komplizierte Quellensituation des zweiten Teils in einem ausführlichen Vorwort.

Ein umfangreicher Bemerkungsteil rundet die Ausgabe ab. Beide Teile des Wohltemperierten Klaviers sind im Henle Urtext auch als Ausgaben mit Fingersatz (HN 16) und als Studien-Editionen ohne Fongersatz (HN 9016) erhältlich.
