In seinem Vorwort skizziert der Herausgeber die Geschichte der italienischen Konzertform bis zum unbegleiteten Solokonzert, als dessen Gipfelwerk Bachs Concerto "nach Italiaenischen Gusto" gelten darf, und erschließt damit zwanglos die Aufführungspraxis dieses für ein "Clavicymbel mit zweyen Manualen" (d.h. für ein großes Cembalo) bestimmten Werkes für das moderne Klavier.
Dieser Ausgabe des Werkes, dessen Autograph verschollen ist, liegen der Erstdruck von 1735, die revidierte Neuauflage desselben bzw. Bachs Handexemplar des Druckes, sowie vier Abschriften zugrunde.
