Shifting Paradigms

Despite being one the the best-selling bands of all time, with over 260 million records, it wasn’t all plain sailing. After working hard to break into the scene, and securing management, promoters and a recording contract with EMI in 1967, front man Syd Barrett’s mental health began to spiral. In December 1967, the band appointed David Gilmour to, in the words of their manager Peter Jenner, "...cover for Barrett’s eccentricities". Barrett became more erratic, and less reliable, and in 1968 he left the band, leaving Gilmour on lead guitar and vocals.

With this new constellation came a fresh drive for the band. Although Richard Wright and Roger Waters were behind some of their songs, Barrett had written most of Pink Floyd’s lyrics and music, so someone needed to take up the creative baton. EMI producer Norman Smith encouraged the band to develop new sounds and produce their own work in the studio, and Waters became the main songwriter.

As the band evolved, their new independent style, drawing on influences from progressive rock, blues, jazz, as well as classical and modern music, led them to universal success. In 1996, Pink Floyd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the albums The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall feature in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

After recording The Wall in 1978, during which Gilmour and Waters became increasingly frustrated with Wright’s lack of input, it was agreed Wright would leave the band. And in 1984, Waters released his first solo album The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, which was the catalyst for his departure. Gilmour and Nick Mason continued to perform and record until 1994, when finally Pink Floyd disbanded.

After brief reunions in 2005, 2007 and 2013-14, Pink Floyd’s Gilmour and Mason reunited in March 2022 to record Hey, Hey, Rise Up! to protest Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
