Michael Haydn – Sheet Music & Scores

Although it may be rare in music history for a pair of brothers to both become famous composers, that is certainly the case for Michael Haydn (1737–1806) and his brother Joseph Haydn. Despite being rather overshadowed by his brother, his music is no less exciting and varied. Browse our sheet music and scores, and explore the wide world of Michael Haydn with Stretta Music today!

His Life

Michael Haydn spent almost his entire professional life in the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg. He did not travel like his brother Joseph or his Austrian colleague Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which would have made him known throughout Europe.

Today, Michael Haydn is best known for his sacred music. “Here lies before your majesty”, Michael Haydn’s German High Masses, alongside Schubert’s German Masses, are some of the few wonderful German secular mass settings of the classical period.

With his works for vocal quartet, Michael Haydn is regarded as a pioneer of the male voice choir, and his students included Carl Maria von Weber and Anton Diabelli.
