As the son of two Salvation Army ministers, Gregson was surrounded by brass band music from a young age, and he tried various brass instruments before dedicating himself to his piano studies. He first started experimenting with composition at the age of 16, and after leaving school, he continued his composition studies at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He won five composition awards at the RAM, and on graduating in 1967, Gregson premiered his first major composition, the Concertante for Piano and Brass Band as piano soloist at the Royal Festival Hall, London to great acclaim.
From here, Gregson had works in the BBC Young Composers Competition, his first publishing contracts, a number of big commissions, and his first record contracts, all within the first few years of his career. He is published by Novello, and records frequently with Naxos and Chandos. With his Connotations composed in 1977, he was the youngest composer to be commissioned by the National Brass Band Championship GB, and he has had many more commissions, including the BBC Philharmonic, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and BBC Radio 3, and he has held many positions, including Principal of the Royal Northern College of Music, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, and Composer in Residence of the Black Dyke Band. In 1988, he was nominated for an Ivor Novello Award for “Best TV Title Music” for his work commissioned by the BBC Young Musician of the Year.
Gregson is currently working on a series of Instrumental CDs with the Halle Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra which is due to be published by Naxos.
