“I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.” David Bowie (1947-2016)
David Bowie definitely kept his promise. As one of the most dazzling personalities in showbiz, and one of the greatest rock and pop stars of all time, the “Thin White Duke” enchanted generations not only with hits like “Life on Mars”, “Heroes” or “Let’s Dance”, but also as an androgynous, extra-terrestrial work of art, constantly reinventing itself again and again. Bowie was born in London as David Robert Jones. In 1969, he first stepped into the public eye with “Space Oddity”, a ballad that was inspired by the film “2001 - A Space Odyssey”. His big breakthrough came in 1972 with “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”. Bowie’s appearance, in all its creative glory, amazed the world.
At a concert in London in 1973, Bowie allowed his fictional character Ziggy Stardust die, in order to devote himself to new projects such as the albums “Transformer”, “ Diamond Dogs”, “Young Americans”, “Stations to Stations” and “Low”. Bowie also produced other artists, and tried his hand at acting, most famously in the film “Labyrinth”.
Bowie lived in West Berlin from 1976 to 1978, a melting pot of what was then the alternative art and music scene. Here he recorded one of his greatest hits, “Heroes”, and the album of the same name. Bowie also worked closely with his friend Iggy Pop on his albums “Lust for Life” and “The Idiot”.
In the 1980s, Bowie reinvented himself again, exploring funk and pop, but without slipping into the trivial. In 1983, the album “Let’s Dance” was a worldwide hit, and he enjoyed huge success with his collaborations with friends like Queen, with “Under Pressure”, Pat Matheny with “This is not America”, and Mick Jagger with “Dancing in the Streets”.
In the 1990s, Bowie worked alongside various artists from the alternative rock scene on his own albums, such as Nine Inch Nails and Placebo.
David Bowie first struggled with health problems in the early 2000s. On January 10, 2016, just two days after the release of his multi-award-winning album “Blackstar”, in which he deals with his own death in a profound, almost unbearably open way, David Bowie passed away.
The prolific, creative genius David Bowie is one of a kind, and he leaves a life’s work that has inspired generations, and will continue to inspire generations to come.
The posthumous album “Toy”, originally recorded in 2000 but never published, was released as part of the latest multi-album box set “Brilliant Adventure (1992-2001)” on November 26th, 2021, and is set for individual release, as a deluxe edition, on January 7th, 2022.
