César Antonovich Cui (1835-1918) was one of the most prominent Russian Romantic Composers and patron of the Russian National School, and he was a member of the “Group of Five”, who focused on traditional Russian music. César Cui came from a Franco-Lithuanian family. His father came to Russia as a soldier in the Napoleonic army, and after the end of the campaign, settled in Vilnius. César Cui followed in his father’s footsteps, and also pursued a military career, he taught at military academies and attained the title of professor and the rank of general.
Cui started learning the piano and composing the age of fourteen. Mili Balakirev was an important influence, who convinced him to focus on traditional Russian music, and to join the “Mighty Handful” or “Group of Five”. Cui soon established himself not only as a composer, but also as an important music critic and theorist, writing almost 800 articles for various European and Russian newspapers.
Cui wrote ten operas, and his works for symphony orchestra, his chamber works and his piano music are also all performed frequently. Like many other composers of the period and region, Cui uses typically Russian folk themes and oriental musical motifs.
