Die Zauberflöte ist die bis heute weltweit populärste Oper überhaupt. Schikaneders Freihaustheater auf der Wieden war eine Vorstadtbühne, eine Art Volkstheater mit entsprechendem Repertoire, dessen Anziehungskraft auf das Publikum sich nicht zuletzt aus dem Einsatz spektakulärer Bühneneffekte speiste. Der Begriff „Maschinenkomödie“ verweist auf das theatralische Umfeld, dem „Die Zauberflöte“ ihre Entstehung verdankt und in dem das Werk ursprünglich angesiedelt war. Die Uraufführung erfolgte am 30. September 1791 unter Mozarts Leitung.
