Relatively unknown today, German pianist and composer Carl Bohm (1844-1920) wrote in a variety of genres, primarily vocal works and chamber music. One of the most well-regarded songwriters during his time, it is said that his publisher, Simrock, was able to finance their publications of the works of Brahms in part due to the profits from Bohm's popular music. Among his chamber music are many string quartets and piano trios, but also this unique "Quartet in the form of a Sonata Movement." Originally composed for four violins, it has been arranged for viola quartet by Timothy Deighton.
