Viktor Kalabis was a Czech composer.
He appeared as a pianist at the age of six. Music studies were only possible after the end of his German activities (during which he had to work in an aircraft factory). From 1945 Kalabis studied musicology at the Charles University in Prague and composition at the local conservatory with Emil Hlobil.
From 1948 to 1952 he studied at the Academy of Music with Jaroslav Řídký . Kalabis' doctoral thesis (on Bartók and Strawinski), which refused to join the Communist Party, was not recognised until 1991. Between 1953 and 1972 he worked as an editor and music director for Czechoslovak Radio in Prague. From 1990 to 2003 Kalabis was president of the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation and founder of the Bohuslav Martinů-Institute.
