The combinative chanson, a genre popular in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, features witty, symbolic interplay among several disparate texts and melodies (some of which are preexistent) and exhibits a variety of ingenious solutions to their combination in one integrated composition. This anthology draws from the major sources of such pieces—the Escorial, the Pixérécourt, and the Dijon chansonnieres.
