Probably the best-known example of a movement labeled “Air” can be found in Bach's Orchestral Suite in D major, BWV 1068: In the second movement, the original trumpets, oboes, and timpani are silent; the strings and basso continuo alone develop a song-like movement in 4/4 time, which contains fully developed, imitative middle voices between the expansive upper voice melody and the bass marching in regular eighth notes.
