This lively and energetic polka is a perfect example of Strauss’s skill in translating extra-musical impressions into music. An actual thunderstorm inspired this piece: in the orchestral version, the timpani rolls depict thunder, and cymbals the flashes of lightning. In this clarinet arrangement, the bass clarinet takes on this role.
