Skin and Bones was commissioned by Brett Baker in memory of trombonist Julian Smith and to mark Garry Reed's 20th anniversary as a member of the Black Dyke Band, who premiered the piece in June 2023. After an introduction by the brass band, the trombones enter with the main theme of the piece.
