Coquette for solo flute "an exercise in melodic ultra-expressive- ness" is a portrait of a sensuous, capricious, flirtatious character, whose ever-changing moods range from yearning self-expression to hysterical agitation. "Coquette" consists of an introductory motif with free extensions and arabesque-like flourishes; an ornate bel canto melody marked arioso; and an impetuoso section consisting of runs, leaps and fast-tongued notes.
