Toccata y Lamento was written as a tribute for one of Latin America’s greatest composers: Heitor Villa-Lobos. The work starts with a D pedal note on the lower string and gradually evolves into highly chromatic and syncopated figures. This pedal tone gives a sense of quasi tonal harmonic center and serves as resonance pole against which dissonant and pungent chords are played.
