Saint-Saens himself had arranged his symphonic poem Danse macabre for two pianos. The work was available in this sonorous version for a long time. However, an arrangement by Ernest Guiraud, derived from the orchestral score and often disappointingly thin, became the standard. The present edition returns to Saint-Saen's arrangement by sticking as closely as possible to his version.
