While most solo compositions for violin or viola da gamba with basso continuo by composers such as Biber, Schmeltzer, and Muffat have been available in print, most similar works by their contemporaries are not. This edition contains all the previously unpublished works for these instruments from the collections of Prince-Bishop Carl Liechtenstein-Castelcorn in Kroměříž, Czech Republic.
The Prince-Bishop was one of the foremost patrons of music in the late seventeenth century, having employed Biber as music director-and he was in direct contact with other composers, such as Schmeltzer and Poglietti. These works offer a broad overview of violin and viola da gamba technique in central and eastern Europe from the mid- to late seventeenth century.
