With "In principio" Arvo Pärt set to music the opening verse of the Gospel of John (John 1, 1-14): "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...". The work is conceived for mixed choir and orchestra and consists of five movements. It follows a strict formal structure and corresponds in the clarity of its musical structure to that of the Latin text.
