Franco Alfano wrote the Quattro Danze Rumene for piano in 1899, in homage, as he himself recounted, to a beautiful Romanian girl. The version for two harps of the Romanian dances n. 3 and n. 4 was the result of the collaboration between the composer and the harpist Amedea Redditi, Mirella Vita’s teacher, and was performed for the first time at the Conservatory of Turin in 1937, when Franco Alfano was the Director of the prestigious Institute. The two pieces were very successful and the maestro himself took care to include them in concerts presented by him.
