Composed in 1979 at the request of Percussion Group 72, and premiered in the same year. The following year, in 1980, it was submitted by NHK to the International Rostrum of Composers (IRC) in Paris and selected as the best work, and has since become a standard work for percussion ensembles performed all over the world
