August Heinrich Neithardt was military music director and founder of the Berlin Dom Choir. He composed many works for this choir, and his most famous song is "Ich bin ein Preusse, kennt ihr meine Farben".

He also composed some works for horn, one concerto for two horns, horn trios about motifs of the "Freischütz", and horn quartets.

The six duos for two horns are dedicated to his friend Charles Stammer and were published by Breitkopf and Härtel in Leipzig.
