The Steiger Variations were written on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Bergkapelle Saar. The ‘Steigerlied’, probably the best-known German-language miners' song, serves here as the model for a series of variations inspired by famous pieces of music from a wide variety of eras and genres.
