The string trio, composed in 1997, stylistically draws on the sound world of Impressionism. Much in the melodic and rhythmic structure reflects elements of Swiss folk music, which is partly a conscious, partly an unconscious result of Fabian Müller's long engagement with this musical tradition. Kühe-Reihen motifs—built on the Lydian scale and thus imitating the natural harmonic series—can be found, for example, in the slow introduction of the first movement as well as in the second movement.
