Description
The String Quartet No. 2, “The Helvetic”, was composed in the summer of 2010 on commission from the Carmina Quartet and the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. The title is a playful allusion to Dvořák’s famous quartet Op. 96, “The American”. The term “Helvetic” is derived from the Helvetii, a Celtic tribe that once inhabited the region of present-day Switzerland, and it has since become synonymous with “Swiss.”
