Having been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1979, Martin was able to travel to Vienna, and eventually onward to the Middle East. In Three Images, he musically describes three personally powerful scenes from his travels: Vienna, the River Jordan, and the Dead Sea. The fourth quartet was completed in 1980.
