La scala solo is a composition consisting of two contrasting layers – ‘two different worlds’. In order to distinguish them more clearly for the performer, I wrote each of them out separately. I recommend practising this work by first playing the material from the bottom stave only, taking care to bring out its nature, its character; then reading the notes on the top stave in the same way.
