A little-known facet of the work of this universal genius of the Romantic era is revealed in his religious choral compositions. The extended choral singing in this mass, which has only relatively short sections for soloists, requires a degree of stamina even from experienced singers. It nevertheless represents an extremely rewarding alternative to the larger masses by Haydn or Schubert.
