Hellers Etudes, Op. 45, first publisbed in 1844, were defined by the composer as «introductory to The Art of Phrasing». Heller clearly states the problem of technique as one of sound quality rather than of mechanics and as a system of controllingno fewer than three tone colours at once. The edition is based on the first edition published and includes a preface, with historical introduction.
