Renewal was written for the wonderful Brazilian guitarist and my good friend, Joao Luiz. It traverses a gamut of emotions experienced during the initial year of the pandemic. The opening use of harmonics and the initial thematic material is contemplative. An energetic and edgy Samba follows, morphing into a terse and anxious section. A more hopeful recapitulation ensues featuring a joyful jazz waltz. More harmonics sprinkled with unresolved harmonies draws Renewal to its questioning conclusion
