This work consists of three movements that flow over into each other. A short melodious introduction is followed by a rhythmic passage whereby the theme is played in canon. In the melancholic and moving middle part, various instruments are given the opportunity to present themselves. Subsequently, a reprise of the first part with slight variations is played.
