The legend ‘Fostedina and the Golden Cap’ is about the capture of Archbishop Willibrord (658-739) - ‘Apostle of the Frisians’ - and several dozen Danes who had converted to Christianity. The young woman Fostedina took pity on them and freed them. As punishment, she had to stand in the market square for a whole day with a crown of thorns on her head. The thorns left her badly scarred, but on her wedding day she was given a golden cap to cover her scars: the so-called ‘ear iron’.
