This revised edition has been prepared after examination of the prior edition as well as the manuscript sources. The manuscript used for engraving is the basic reference; the first sketch is available but, as the composer made a number of changes in the engraving manuscript, it has limited usefulness. Voice and orchestra versions of the last three songs are also available and were referred to where treatment of the music is similar to that in the voice-piano version. (P. Bartók)
