His Life & Work

Valentin Silvestrov studied composition at the Kiev Conservatoire from 1958-64. He summed up his postmodern approach with the following words:
`I don't write new music. My music is an echo and response to what already exists.´
In the 1960s, Silvestrov was co-founder of the `Kiever Avantgarde´ group, whose members were mainly inspired by Anton Webern and the Darmstadt School. After being expelled from the Ukrainian Composers' Union in 1970, he devoted himself entirely to tonal and melodic writing. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he began composing sacred works, influenced by Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox music. In these works, he was perhaps at his furthest from modernism.
In 2014, Silvestrov set the words of the patriotic poem `Testament´ to music, and dedicated the piece to the memory of Serhiy Nigoyan, who was the first victim of the 2014 Maidan Revolution. He also wrote many film scores, and nine symphonies.
