Johann Wilhelm Gabrielski was born in Berlin and learned to play the flute from his father, an officer of the Prussian army (as did his brother Julius, who also became a flutist).
He was a pupil of August Schroeck the solo flutist of the Berlin Opera.
Later he became solo flutist at the Stettiner Theater, as well as royal chamber musician at the Prussian court.
